Battlefield 4 Final Stand is a new addition to the multiplayer shooter Battlefield 4, which takes the climax of battles to the winter expanses of Russia. It includes four unique maps: Operation Whiteout, Hammerhead, Giants of Karelia and Hangar 21, as well as weapons and vehicles that will be very different from anything that could be found on the Battlefield battlefield before.

Game engine 

Battlefield 4 is based on Frostbite Engine 3. Frostbite Engine is a game engine developed by EA Digital Illusions CE; used both in its own developments and in projects of other Electronic Arts branches. The first game created using this engine was Battlefield: Bad Company in 2008. The engine was developed to replace the technically outdated Refractor Engine technology that was used in the company's previous games.

In March 2013, DICE introduced the game Battlefield 4, announcing that it would be released on a new version of the Frostbite engine - 3, and in May 2014, DICE, Visceral Games and EA announced another game on Frostbite 3 - Battlefield: Hardline. DICE, without resting on its laurels, continues to develop the Frostbite Engine, making it more realistic in all aspects: picture, physics, sound.

Frostbite 3 can simulate huge and highly detailed battlefields with functional destruction that occurs both spontaneously and at the will of the player. Seamless locations and dynamic environments, built according to a new principle. Previously, the appearance of the surrounding world was created, for example, a tree sways in the wind according to the principle of scripting. In the case of Frostbite 3, the developer is given a tool to create a tree, and the physics engine itself determines how the environment affects this very tree.

In the universe, Frostbite all interact with each other - wind, waves and clouds all move in accordance with the forces of nature. For example, after blowing up a car, you will be able to see how the trees standing nearby will sway. Huge locations, combined with a lot of people running and interacting with you, create a feeling of a holistic reality.

Destructibility has always been the main feature of Frostbite technology, where everything is aimed at the direct impact of the gameplay on the environment - here you have small sparks appearing during a collision, and huge fragments breaking when falling from a height.

The new version of the engine implements a system called Levolution, which allows players to interact with the environment on a new level. Without going into too much detail, Levolution is a constantly changing world. You can change the map during a multiplayer game, where the explosion of a column will collapse the top floor, and the fall of a sub-scraper or the bursting of a dam will change the environment of the game level. Levolution is activated automatically only when certain events occur on the map. For example, on the Paracel Storm network map in Battlefield 4, you can roll an aircraft carrier ashore.

A new feature coming to Frostbite 3 is consistent water simulation, meaning that all players will see the same wave in the same position at the same time. In Battlefield 4 you don't float on a flat surface because you are affected by various waves and this applies not only to the character, but to vehicles and Ragg-doll objects.

Frostbite 3 has many features aimed at immersing you in the story and gameplay. One of the most important things is facial animation and how the characters' eyes look. Character art in Battlefield has never looked so realistic. The use of subsurface scattering, the essence of which is to describe the mechanism of light propagation, in which light, penetrating into a translucent body through its surface, is scattered inside the body itself, and is repeatedly reflected from particles of the body in a random direction and at irregular angles. Paralax animation is used to depict the iris of the eye, which makes the eyes look like real ones.

Frostbite 3 is a powerful tool in the hands of the developer, and the multi-platform engine includes support for everything from iPhone to new generation consoles. The engine provides the developer with everything necessary to create games, allowing him to pay more attention to the creative side, for greater enjoyment of the gameplay.

Advanced Game Settings

Battlefield 4 Final Stand is an integral part of Battlefield 4 and has both basic and advanced graphics settings. As befits a Battlefield game, there are four quality levels available for all settings: ultra, high, medium and low. You can also flexibly manipulate individual settings.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment of the in-game benchmark:    

Our video cards were tested at separate screen sizes of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Battlefield 4 Final Stand in 100/120/150/200% modes, depending on the resolution. SLI and AMD CrossFireX are currently fully supported by the game, showing good scalability.

We conducted and presented testing of Mantle technology on 3 basic AMD graphics solutions. The increase from its use was observed within 5-7%, depending on the solution.

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.

The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings with anti-aliasing disabled.

RAM test

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 5960X@4.6 GHz with 16GB DDR4 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).

As we can see, with various quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Battlefield 4 Final Stand is at the level of 1.7 gigabytes.

On a 6GB system, Battlefield 4 Final Stand consumes about 4.5GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 5.5 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, the total memory consumption was almost 6.5 gigabytes. And with 32 gigabytes of RAM, the system consumes 7.3 gigabytes of RAM.
