Unity Technologies Cancels Controversial Runtime Fee for Developers, Raises Subscription Prices
Unity Technologies has officially announced the cancellation of the controversial Runtime Fee for game developers. CEO Matthew Bromberg called the move "the democratization of game development." However, the cancellation of the Runtime Fee has led to an increase in subscription prices: Unity Enterprise will increase by 25%, and Unity Pro by 8%. At the same time, the Runtime Fee will continue to apply to non-gaming companies.
For developers using the Unity Personal subscription, the conditions were relaxed - the annual revenue threshold was increased from $ 100 to $ 200 thousand. The Runtime Fee commission, introduced in 2023, caused widespread discontent in the industry, as developers had to pay a fixed amount for each installation of the game. This decision led to a scandal, a mass boycott of the Unity engine and a deterioration in the company's reputation.
Now, after a management shakeup, Unity is trying to regain developer trust. Bromberg emphasized that the company is willing to make compromises to remain a reliable partner for developers.
