Origin is finally closed: EA moves to EA App only
Electronic Arts has permanently shut down Origin — from April 17 work has stopped old PC client that existed for over 13 years. The reason for its closure was Microsoft stops supporting 32-bit applications, which made further development of Origin impossible.
As a replacement, EA offers new EA App, launched in 2022. This client is running only on 64-bit systems Windows and is now the only way to download and play Electronic Arts games on PC.
The transition to the EA App is extremely simple: you need to download and install the application from the official website, then log in with your EA account. will automatically detect all purchased games, and will also transfer cloud saves, if they were previously activated in Origin.
Origin launched in 2011 as EA's answer to the rapidly expanding digital distribution landscape. It became the foundation for services like EA Play and first-party game launches like Battlefield, FIFA, and Mass Effect. Despite its popularity, Origin has regularly faced criticism for its outdated interface, instability, and performance issues.
With the move to EA App, the company hopes to improve the user experience, providing a modern client with improved navigation, automatic update downloads, and Xbox and Steam integration. Users are strongly encouraged to uninstall Origin and switch to the EA App to maintain access to their games and achievements.
