GOG has emphasized its position: full ownership of DRM-free games, unlike Steam
Digital store GOG responded to recent changes at a competitor Steam, where users now see a warning that they are only purchasing license, not the product itself. GOG used this as an opportunity to reiterate its policy of distributing games without DRM, posting a screenshot of the checkout page, which states that when purchasing, users receive not only the game, but also a standalone launcher that cannot be revoked.
All games offered on GOG, available from offline installers, which means that once a user downloads a product, they will have it forever, even if the platform is closed or no longer supported. Unlike Steam, where users now receive warnings against the backdrop of the new law in California, which comes into force on 2025 year, games on GOG remain entirely at the disposal of the buyer.
Steam was forced to make this change due to new legislation requiring digital stores to clearly inform users that they are purchasing a license for a game, rather than full ownership.
