TSMC expects record demand for 2nm process technology - it turned out to be cheaper and more promising than 3nm

TSMC predicts sharp rise in demand for 2nm process technology (N2) — the level of interest in it has already exceeded the 3nm indicators. According to industry sources, the cost of producing chips using the 2nm process technology turned out to be more profitable, and its technological advantages make it particularly attractive to large customers.

It is already being reported that TSMC is planning to enter the volume of 100 wafers of 000nm process technology by 2. The start of mass production is scheduled for the second half of 2026, and the first consumer devices on these chips may appear in 2027. The first segment will be mobile electronics - Apple is preparing up to four SoCs based on 2nm, MediaTek has already completed the tape-out stage of its flagship chip, and Qualcomm is also planning to move to this node.

Active implementation in the segment is expected later high performance computing (HPC) - this will include companies such as NVIDIA and AMD. The main factor of success was nanosheet transistor architecture, which is being used for the first time within this process technology. It provides a significant reduction in costs without increasing the number of EUV layers, as was the case with 3nm. It is low cost of implementation и optimized cost structure make 2nm not only a technological but also an economic breakthrough.
