PlayStation 6 to Run on AMD Chip Again Despite Intel's Attempt to Win Contract
Like previous PlayStation consoles, the PlayStation 6 will once again use a chip from AMD. However, as it became known, in 2022, Intel almost won the contract to develop a new chip for Sony, but lost in the competition. According to a report by Reuters, AMD and Intel were the final contenders in the bidding process for the contract. The main reason Intel failed to reach an agreement was a dispute over how much profit the company would receive from each chip sold.
Discussions between Intel and Sony spanned several months and included high-level meetings between CEOs, engineers, and top executives from both companies. In addition to the price issue, concerns about compatibility with previous PlayStation consoles arose, which was another reason why Sony chose AMD.
Although Intel failed to reach a deal, the company said it "strongly disagrees with this characterization" and declined to comment further. AMD also declined to comment on the matter.
The PlayStation 6 is still in development and is expected to be released in a few years. Sony is known to be aiming to make it the most powerful next-gen console, and machine learning technologies will play a key role in achieving this.
