NVIDIA Announces Open Core Transition for GPU v Linux

NVIDIA has announced a significant change to its Linux driver policy. With the release of the new R560 driver series, NVIDIA will begin using the open kernel by default. GPU for GeForce RTX 20 series and newer graphics cards. This solution opens up new opportunities for developers and improves the integration of NVIDIA products into the Linux ecosystem.

Until this point, NVIDIA architectures ran on proprietary modules, making it difficult to develop and interact with open source software. However, with the new update, NVIDIA is committed to making the experience of using its products on Linux more open and accessible. It will also allow the company to compete with AMD, which has a long history of using open drivers and has a significant market share among Linux users.

According to the announcement, if supported versions are found during installation from the .run file, GPU, the default installation will use open source kernel modules. However, all users can still choose to install proprietary modules via the --kernel-module-type=proprietary command line option.

This change has been welcomed by the developer community and represents a bold step by NVIDIA to improve its support for open development. In the future, NVIDIA architectures are expected to move entirely to new open source drivers, increasing competition and improving driver support across platforms.
