Modified GeForce RTX 4090 with 48GB VRAM tested - it's useless for gaming, but perfect for AI
Video review from a blogger MK confirmed that This card is not suitable for gamers, despite the impressive amount of VRAM. The original RTX 4090 comes with 24gb of memory but In China, modifications with doubled volume appeared, designed to circumvent the shortage of AI accelerators. In essence, it is homemade versions based on RTX 4090, with a redesigned printed circuit board and a non-standard layout. The design requires installing memory on both sides of the PCB, which makes such assemblies extremely unstable.
In tests the map showed high noise levels - up to 65 dB, and although temperatures remained in the 70–86°C range, gaming performance did not surpass the standard version. In Unigine GPU Stress Test showed almost no differences in frames. Thus, for gamers such modification does not make sense.
However, everything changes when running AI models. with the Google Gemma-2 model (27B parameters) through LM Studio, and GPU consistently withstood the load, without showing any glitches. This explains why such cards are sold in China for around $3400, which is even higher than the upcoming RTX 5090.
The conclusion is obvious - modified RTX 4090 created exclusively for AI tasks, where the amount of video memory is important, not the maximum frame rate. It is not intended for gaming, and it is simply not practical to use it in gaming PCs.
