Microsoft buys over 100,000 GPU Nvidia's $19,4 billion GB300 for internal AI teams
Microsoft is significantly expanding its AI assets with a deal to $19,4 billion with data center provider NebiusAs part of the agreement, the company will receive about 100,000 new ones GPU Nvidia GB300, which will not be used for Azure clients, but internal Microsoft teams, including the developers of Copilot and other AI solutions.
According to sources, Microsoft will gain access to more than 1400 Nvidia server racks. GB300 NVL72, each of which includes 72 B300 GPUThe estimated cost of such a rack is about $ 3 million, making this agreement the largest investment in AI infrastructure in Microsoft's history. For comparison, the combined investments in other neo-cloud providers (CoreWeave, Lambda, etc.) previously amounted to $13 billion.
Microsoft's own data centers are primarily focused on leasing to customers, but there is a rapid growth in internal AI developments - including creation of large language models and a personal AI assistant — forced the company to lease capacity from external operators. At the same time, Microsoft is planning to build a massive 315-acre data center in Wisconsin, with its own power supply and enough bandwidth to "wrap the Earth in fiber cable 4,5 times."
The massive expansion of AI infrastructure is already leading to rising wholesale electricity prices and environmental protests. However, Microsoft continues to increase its investments, competing even with players like OpenAI and CoreWeave.
